Consumer Reports warning RE: hotels and handling of payment card data

Interesting report and video from the folks at Consumer Reports with consumer level info on hotels and PCI DSS compliance.  Not much here from those in the business of payment cards and PCI.

Article Summary:
  • Bad history of breeches at hotels.
  • Not much PCI DSS compliance at hotels.
 Good advice given:
  • Use your credit card not your debit card.
Iffy advice given:
  • Ask the manager/owner for a copy of their AOC?  Maybe if the article was titled “how to delay your hotel check in”.  The hotel guests who would benefit most from this are QSAs or work for acquirers.  Most consumers would be better off trying to sweet talk their way into a room upgrade instead.
